Dieterich Spahn’s imagery is drawn from a variety of sources, however always intrigued by form and color. His later work was inspired by images is antique toys, particularly from popular western films. He said, I like to transform the toys into large-scale images, and introduce a different coloration to create a new identity, without losing the original charm. Composition of form and color, lines, and patterns on a textured surface integrate into a cohesive part of my abstract works.
Dieterich Spahn is also an internationally renowned stained glass artist. He has completed more than 200 commissions for churches, synagogues, hospitals, universities, libraries and private residences. Many of his works can be found around the Twin Cities, but he has also accomplished numerous commissions across the United States. Spahn's work is connected directly to contemporary German stained glass artists, mentors and contemporaries, many whom have created work in the mediums of both glass and painting. Spahn continued to explore new media and techniques with his painting.
