Shannon McElree is a Twin Cities-based artist who creates gestural abstract paintings, often on outsized masonite panels. The oil paint moves across his compositions with an amazing fluidity. An avid bicyclist, McElree compares his cycling to his painting. Each are journeys with no destination, just experiences of discovery. He therefore titles his paintings simply after street names along his routes.
Born in northeastern Iowa, McElree says As a child I was exploring under the bleachers at the fairgrounds, my play yard across the street from our house. We found several buckets of paint. Shiny thick, runny silver paint, tons of it. I opened one of the industrial metal cans and explored the possibilities. I'm hooked. I'm eight, I'm a young boy.
By college days McElree already had a conscious idea about the beauty of Abstract Art. It suits me well, with its nature to be interpreted by the viewer as much as the artist who saw it happen. The same magic as the silver had when it was spread through the dirt.
Shannon McElree’s paintings are in numerous private and corporate art collections.
