5X5 Drawing Show brings to mind concepts of spirit, passage, transcendence and radiance. Each artist in this exhibition divulges his spirit with a uniquely platted passage toward transcendence and radiance.
Nicholas Harper refers to the struggle between our worldly natures and our spiritual potential. He refers to his style as 'magical realism' and is influenced by the luminous, centered format of Russian Orthodox Icons. In these mixed media drawings elongated, upward thrusting necks project mysterious deep-set eyes of feminine portrait heads with radiant auras.
Jesse Quam has been known for images influenced by primitive video games from the 1970's. Here, a result of the tragic loss of his body of past work, he reaches for the spirit of distant galaxies. With intimate marks of graphite and erasure, he 'charts' five stars, each the brightest in its respective constellation. These miniature energy-filled drawings portray a dream-like awareness of the Cosmos.
Tom Riggle employs Cubist structures and flat, medieval-like space in his charcoal and acrylic drawings. Spirit-infused narrative makes a sweeping passage across each drawing. According to Riggle, a recurrent bull symbol refers to an earlier artist's statement regarding entering his studio to confront the challenge of the empty canvas. "Like the toreador, sometimes the artist wins and sometimes the bull."
Scott Seekins, in a series of mixed media drawings, presents a central figure stepping into a wondrous, symbol-saturated beyond. With tattoo symbols attached to his being, he seems prepared for a transcendent future. The arch shape that supports the drawings gives them added threshold effect. The black silhouette is reminiscent of Seekins's well-known Winter persona in the Twin Cities.
Michael Thomsen is a master of assemblage sculptures with narratives of mysterious objects, mood and wonder. Nostalgia plays a key roll as well. In this set of graphite and mixed media drawings, lines and erased passages emanating from subjects create a reverberating spiritual radiance.
